Join Trine to understand her Centennial paintings which took a year to create, working on several at a time as each of the 100 pieces has about 50 layers of transparent oil paint. Learn about Trine’s two Artist Residencies in our National Parks, her first at Denali in Alaska, and her recent Artist Residency in Rocky Mountain National Park. At the end of the talk, we will gather for an informal discussion and tour of the 30 works on display.

When Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) celebrated its100th Anniversary in 2015 – 2016, artist Trine Bumiller was preparing a stunning exhibit based on her coveted Artist Residency at the park the previous year. A selection of her 100 paintings for 100 years is on view at Cozens Museum through April 22.

For generations, American artists have had a love affair with our national parks, particularly in the west, from Ansel Adams at Yosemite to Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt at Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Grand Canyon and more. Honoring the relationship between the arts and parks, RMNPs Artist Residency program is one of the longest running programs in the national park system.

The program offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their discipline surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. For the 2-week residency at RMNP, artists stay at the William Allen White Cabin near Estes Park. Currently the Artist Residency program is on hold while RMNP renovates the cabin.

Trine (Danish, ‘tree-na’), who lives in Denver and Fraser, used her residency to immerse herself in the outdoors to sketch, photograph and examine nature up close while hiking, one of her Grand County passions. Trine’s artistic focus to interpret the patterns and shapes of the natural world led to her prior artist residency at Denali National Park in Alaska.

As an outcome of her artist residency at RMNP, Trine created 100 paintings for each year of RMNP and each is named for a year, from 1915 to 2015. She painted obsessively and painstakingly applying 50 transparent oil glazes, over a year’s time. She worked on several of the 100 paintings simultaneously, “a brushstroke becomes a painting, becoming a series of 100 paintings.”

From their Fraser home, Trine and her husband ski and hike most every weekend.

In her interview as one of “Colorado’s 100 Creatives” in Westword, Trine discussed her interest in showing her work and that of others in different spaces outside the traditional gallery realm. Showing her Centennial at Cozens Museum, in her 2nd hometown of Fraser, helps fulfill those goals.

Trine exhibited 3 pieces from the 100 paintings series at the 2016 Art Out of Thin Air group show at Cozens and gave an engaging talk on her art process. Trine is looking to help create art spaces outside of large urban areas where people can see, make and become involved with art. Perhaps GCHA can help with these visions for Middle Park!

After graduating, she lived and painted in New York City. Since moving to Colorado, she has exhibited her work internationally in galleries and museums including the complete100 Paintings for 100 Years RMNP at McNichols Building in Denver. About Trine Bumiller

Trine Bumiller explores the relationship between memory and experience through paintings and installations that lie at the edge of abstract and environmental concepts. She has a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and studied in Rome with the European Honors Program. She lives in Fraser and Denver and was a participant in the 2016 Art Out of Thin Air exhibit held at Cozens Ranch Museum.

Trine’s exhibition, Centennial: 100 Paintings for 100 Years, stems from an artist residency at Rocky Mountain National Park. On display at Cozens Museum, from March 18 through April 22, 2017 are 30 of the inspired paintings.

Trine has exhibited with the Cincinnati Art Museum, Las Cruces Museum of Art and University of Wyoming Art Museum. She has received grants from Colorado Council on the Arts and Colorado Federation of the Arts and attended residencies at Yaddo, Denali National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, artltd., ArtNews, the New Art Examiner, the Christian Science Monitor, Westword and the Denver Post.

Trine’s work is in the collections of the City of Denver, the University of Colorado, the University of Iowa and Kirkland Museum. She is represented by Robischon Gallery, Denver, Markel Fine Arts, New York and Zg Gallery, Chicago.
